Defender Glenn Moore is aiming to become the first Australian to play in the Russian Premier-Liga.
Shakhtar plan
The 24-year-old full-back has joined Russian champions FC Spartak Moscow on trial after initially heading to Europe to try out for Ukrainian team FC Shakhtar Donetsk. Moore moved on to Moscow after learning that Shakhtar have no coach at the moment.
Tough competition
Moore, who started his career in Australia with Newcastle Breakers, made his name with Sydney’s Olympic Sharks. He has played three goals in 136 games and also earned ten caps for Australia’s Under-21 team. Moore hopes a move to Europe will give him a chance to break into the national team, despite tough competition for places.
British origin should help
"My grandmother is English, she comes from Newcastle," said Moore. "That’s why I have played soccer since I turned five and my father insisted I would become a professional. My British origin should help in Europe, as I can become an EU citizen in 48 hours."
Spartak's stature
Moore is well aware of Spartak’s stature in European football and is eager to impress. "I know that Spartak has won almost every Russian championship and is in the [UEFA] Champions League every year," he said. "I still remember the one where Spartak beat Arsenal [FC] 4-1 [in November 2000]."
