England Under-19 captain Jermaine Jenas completed his €8.2m move from Nottingham Forest FC to Newcastle United FC on Monday.
Press conference
The 18-year-old was unveiled at a press conference at St James' Park on Monday afternoon. Jenas arrived on Tyneside to discuss personal terms with the club on Friday after Nottingham Forest accepted Newcastle's offer, and agreement was reached later the same day.
’We are delighted’
The transfer was subject to the results of a medical, which were received on Monday to allow the deal to go through. Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd said: "We are delighted to have secured the services of Jermaine Jenas".
Timely boost
Jenas' arrival is timely for Newcastle, who are facing up to the prospect of having to do without midfield player Kieron Dyer, who has been ruled out for up to eight weeks after suffering a stress fracture of the foot. This latest dip into the transfer market takes manager Bobby Robson's spending since the end of last season to €34m after his recruitment of Laurent Robert, Craig Bellamy and Robbie Elliott.
Room to manoeuvre
But Christian Bassedas' loan move to Spanish side CD Tenerife and Warren Barton's transfer to Derby County FC have allowed the club room for manoeuvre. Jenas' arrival could also mean a swift resolution to midfield player Robert Lee's position. The 35-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has been told his situation will not be reviewed until the summer, and that is a source of frustration for a player who is attracting interest from other clubs.
