AFC Ajax goalkeeper Fred Grim is to retire from football aged 36, the Dutch Eredivisie club has announced.

Ten years at Ajax
Grim's 18-year career was spent at just two clubs - Ajax, whom he first joined in 1984, and SC Cambuur Leeuwarden, where he played from 1986 to 1994 before rejoining the Amsterdam club.

Three league triumphs
His time at Ajax coincided with many of their greatest years, including the championship wins of 1995 - when they also claimed the UEFA Champions League - 1996 and 1998. He has been first choice for the last three seasons, keeping Romanian international goalkeeper Bogdan Lobont out of the side - forcing him to join FC Dinamo Bucuresti on loan.

Possible coaching role
However, Ajax coach Ronald Koeman has decided to recall Lobont for next season, having failed in an attempt to get him for the rest of 2001/02, and Grim has opted to retire, although he is set to hold talks with Ajax technical director Leo Beenhakker about joining the coaching team.
