McGinlay holds hosts at bay
The Scottish Premier League side twice took the lead at Tannadice Park but had to settle for a 2-2 draw after a 74th-minute goal from Pat McGinlay levelled the scores.
Leads squandered
David Winters had given United a seventh minute-lead, but Ayr struck back almost immediately through Scott Crabbe. Craig Easton gave the home side the lead again in the fifth-round tie, but United could not hold on for victory.
