Republic of Ireland: Rovers close in on leaders

Members

Shamrock Rovers FC earned three valuable points with a 3-2 win over Monaghan United FC on Sunday.

Shamrock Rovers FC moved to within two points of National League leaders Shelbourne FC on Sunday courtesy of a 3-2 home win over bottom-of-the-table Monaghan United FC.

Grant double
Sean Francis opened the scoring for Rovers four minutes after half-time and Stephen Grant doubled the advantage in the 66th minute. Rovers defender Shane Robinson put the ball in his own net in the 67th minute to give the visitors hope and Robbie Brunton stunned the home fans with an equaliser ten minutes later. Monaghan were handed their 18th defeat in 26 games, though, when, with just four minutes left, Grant netted his second of the night.

Cork held
Cork City FC stalled in their bid to make up ground on third-placed Saint Patrick's Athletic FC after being held to a goalless draw at home against lowly Dundalk FC. St Patrick's failed to capitalise, however, as they played out a scoreless draw with University College Dublin FC. The match between Galway United FC and Bohemian FC was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
