Golden Shoe: Prolific Pauleta pursues Jardel

Members

Portuguese striker Pauleta has moved from eighth to second place in the Golden Shoe standings.

Portuguese striker Pauleta was the most significant mover in Europe's Golden Shoe standings this week, moving up from eighth to second place.

Watch out Jardel
The FC Girondins de Bordeaux forward took his tally to 19 goals with a double in his side's 3-1 win at home against Montpellier Hérault SC on Saturday. Pauleta is now on 38 points, four points behind Sporting Clube de Portugal's Mario Jardel who did not play this weekend.

Larsson also struggling
Indeed, Pauleta has every chance of taking top spot in the coming weeks as both Jardel and fourth-placed Henrik Larsson are struggling with injuries. Jardel missed his first game since his summer move to Sporting with an injury to his left knee as SC Farense were beaten 1-0. Larsson added to his tally with a goal in Celtic FC's 3-0 win at home against Dundee FC before suffering a hamstring problem. The Swede now has 36 points. Maksim Gruznov from the Estonian club JK Trans Narva is ahead of Larsson by a point. But with the Estonian season over, he is likely to drop further down the table.

Hubner hits top ten
Another significant mover this week was ninth-placed Dario Hubner, who entered the top ten with a double strike as Piacenza FC beat AC Venezia 5-0. Hubner is now Piacenza's highest scorer ever in a Serie A season. Another Italian striker, Christian Vieri, has just moved up from 15th place to eleventh with two goals as Internazionale FC were 3-0 winners over Hellas-Verona FC.

  • Note that Dmitri Vyazmikin has transferred from FC Torpedo Moscow to newly promoted Uralan Elista in the Russian league.
  • Only the leading five countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England) on the UEFA Ranking after the 2000/01 season have 2 as their multiplier. This is to emphasise the difference in (international) performance level between the clubs from those countries and those from the other countries.
  • In a change from last season, a player cannot first play in a summer league (e.g. Norway) and then in a winter league (e.g. Spain) and combine the points total for each season. For example, last season John Carew played for Rosenborg BK and then moved to Valencia CF for the start of the Spanish season. From this season, he would have had two separate rankings.
