Southampton FC and former English international Matthew Le Tissier will retire from football at the end of the season.
Formal announcement
The 33-year-old Guernsey-born midfield player, who has suffered numerous injuries in recent years, formally announced his decision on Southampton's official website this evening. He will officially retire after his testimonial match against an England XI including Alan Shearer, John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Tony Adams and Ian Wright on Tuesday 14 May.
'Unable to prove my form'
"I have not been able to get a run of games even at reserve level so that has left me unable to prove my form and fitness to earn a new contract," Le Tissier said. "Even if the club offered me one through sentimental reasons, I could not take money under false pretences."
One-club career
After signing for the south coast club as a trainee and making his debut in 1986, Le Tissier stayed with the club for the entirety of his career, despite interest from more established sides. He scored a total of 209 goals in 462 appearances, with strikes of a spectacular nature being his trademark, including the last-ever goal at Southampton's Dell stadium in 2001 against Arsenal FC.
England caps
He was first capped by England under Terry Venables in 1995 as a substitute against Denmark. He went on to win eight caps in all but made just one full appearance. Le Tissier will stay at Southampton, working in hospitality and on the club's digital radio station.
Chairman comments
"Matt has been a great servant to the club and we thank him from the bottom of our hearts for all he has done for the club and for the pleasure he has brought to the fans," said Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe.
