Article body
FC Schalke 04 legend Yves Eigenrauch has retired from football aged 30 due to cartilage damage in his knee.
UEFA Cup winner
Eigenrauch has been with the 1. Bundesliga club since he was 19, having joined from DSC Arminia Bielefeld. In that time he played 229 league games for Schalke, scoring three goals, and claimed a UEFA Cup winners' medal in 1997.
'No return'
"I realise that I will not be able to return to the level of fitness you need if you want to compete at Bundesliga level," said Eigenrauch. "I made three attempts at a comeback, but it never worked out. I have to accept this fact. My years as a professional player have simply been great, but now I must look forward to something new."
