Paris Saint-Germain FC suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat by FC Lorient in the French Cup quarter-finals at Parc des Princes on Saturday.
Chabert winner
It was PSG's second elimination in eight days from a French cup competition after their 1-0 loss at home against FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the League Cup semi-final last Saturday. Lorient, beaten 5-0 by PSG in a first division match at the same ground in January, scored the game's only goal just after the half-hour when midfielder Cedric Chabert surprised the defence and goalkeeper Jérôme Alonzo with a half-volley from the edge of the box.
On the back foot
PSG coach Luis Fernandez, watching in the stands because of his suspension from the bench, responded to Lorient's goal by sending on Nigeria's Austin Okocha and League Cup finalists Lorient, who rested eight first-choice players for the relegation battles ahead, were on the back foot throughout the second half and survived a string of PSG chances.
Bastia scrape through
SC Bastia were fortunate to overcome fourth division Libourne-Saint-Seurin 1-0 after extra-time in Bordeaux. Tony Vairelles scored Bastia's goal from a tight angle 20 minutes into extra time.
Dobo denied
The former French international rose at the far post to meet a cross from the right and head the ball down between the base of the post and diving goalkeeper Franck Grandel. Amateurs Libourne, who had eliminated top-flight sides Lille OSC and FC Metz in earlier rounds, had more chances than Bastia in regulation time and in the 84th minute Bastia goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel made a brilliant diving save from a header by striker Yann Dobo.
Other ties
Holders RC Strasbourg of the second division were away to CS Sedan-Ardennes later on Saturday and AS Monaco FC visit second division Nîmes Olympique SC on Sunday.
