Article body
Chelsea FC booked their place in the FA Cup semi-finals with a convincing 4-0 away win against Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday.
Gudjohnsen double
Eidur Gudjohnsen scored twice as Chelsea reached the last four for the fifth time in nine seasons. French defender William Gallas poked home from close range to open the scoring after 12 minutes, before Gudjohnsen doubled their advantage with a cool finish three minutes into the second period.
Sweet revenge
Graeme Le Saux made the most of a Tim Sherwood error to make it 3-0, before Gudjohnsen raced clear of the Tottenham defence to slide the ball past a helpless Neil Sullivan in the 66th minute. The result gives Chelsea some sense of revenge, following their 5-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham in the semi-final of the League Cup in January
Middlesbrough through
Middlesbrough FC became the first side to reach the semi-finals when they beat Everton FC 3-0 win at the Riverside stadium earlier in the day.
Horrible mix-up
The game had been almost devoid of incident for 35 minutes until a horrible mix-up between Everton defender Alessandro Pistone and goalkeeper Steve Simonsen presented Noel Whelan with the opportunity to roll the ball into an empty net.
Match-winning spell
Szilárd Nemeth headed the second two minutes later after Alen Bokšic's chip came back off the bar and Paul Ince completed the match-winning spell from close range after Everton's shellshocked defence had allowed Whelan to run half the length of the pitch.
Cruise control
In the second half Middlesbrough were able to switch to cruise control and Everton's only real chance came after 64 minutes when Tomasz Radzinski's shot was blocked by goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer.
Second semi-final appearance
The victory for Middlesbrough, who knocked out Manchester United FC and Blackburn Rovers FC in earlier rounds, takes them into the semi-finals for only the second time in their 126-year history. The only previous occasion was in 1997, when they went on to lose in the final to Chelsea FC.
Fulham through
In Sunday's other quarter-final, Fulham FC weathered a first-half storm to reach their first FA Cup semi-final for 27 years as Steve Marlet's 47th-minute header killed off first division West Bromwich Albion. Marlet's goal also kept Fulham on target for their first major trophy in their 114-year history.
Other game
Arsenal FC and Newcastle United FC drew 1-1 in their quarter-final match on Saturday and will have to replay.
