Canaydin wins Galatasaray presidency

Özhan Canaydin has been appointed as the new president of Galatasaray SK, replacing Mehmet Cansun. 
 
Failing to fulfil his pledge
Cansun was voted off the board at the club's annual general congress on Saturday after failing to fulfil his pledge to rid the club of its debts during his eight months at the helm.
 
Canaydin delight
Canaydin was delighted with his appointment. "Although I have enjoyed lots of things at Galatasaray this is the biggest happiness in my life," said the 59-year-old. "I have been working for this for 20 years. I want to thank Mehmet Cansun for all the efforts he made during his term. We have big targets, we will unite the whole Galatasaray community and are determined to try to achieve our goals."

Debate goes on
Canaydin, a former Galatasaray basketball player and an established figure in the textile industry, will officially start his duty on Tuesday. Cansun was elected last July, replacing Faruk Suren, and pledged to clear the club's debts before standing again. Despite Cansun claiming to have reduced Galatasaray's debts to €11.3m the debate still rages.
