Former Swiss international Eugen Meier has died aged 72 after a long illness

Inspirational figure
Meier, known as 'Geni', was the captain and inspiration of the legendary BSC Young Boys team that won the Swiss championship four times in a row between 1957 and 1960. In the 1958/59 season, the central defender scored the only goal in the European Champion Clubs' Cup semi-final first leg at home against Stade de Reims, only to see his side lose 3-1 on aggregate after a defeat in Paris.

International honours
He made 42 appearances for Switzerland and was a key figure in the FIFA World Cup squads of 1954 and 1962. Meier, who died on Wednesday, twice finished top scorer in the domestic league, in 1953 and 1959.
