Both Mikel Arteta and his current club Paris Saint-Germain FC have expressed surprise about Rangers FC's official announcement last Monday that the Spanish youngster was set to join the Ibrox club.
'Best player to join us'
"Arteta will be the best player to join us after Giovanni van Bronkhorst," announced Rangers chairman David Murray. However, it now appears that Rangers had not reckoned with the reaction of the player and in particular the French club.
'I've signed nothing'
"I never met the head of Rangers. And I've signed nothing," insisted Arteta. "I'm very surprised about all this. All these speculations have now been running in the media for several days. I will certainly speak about all this with the person who takes care of my interests," Arteta added.
'Barcelona cannot sell the player'
PSG's chairman Laurent Perpère added: "According to our agreement with FC Barcelona, from whom we loaned the player, we have until 20 May to confirm whether to buy him. Until that date, Barcelona cannot sell the player to anybody."
Invaluable asset
PSG's head coach Luis Fernandez has always underlined that he considers Arteta one of his core players for years to come.
