Article summary
Stelios Spanoudakis has been named as the new president of Panathinaikos FC.
Article body
Stelios Spanoudakis has been appointed president of Panathinaikos FC after Angelos Filippidis was banned from undertaking the role for six months by the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO).
Ban and fine
Filippidis was reprimanded for the part he played in the unsavoury incidents which occurred following the Athens derby with Olympiakos Piraeus FC on 24 March. He was also fined €18,000 and has been banned from attending matches for 18 months.
Elderly businessman
Spanoudakis, a 75-year-old businessman, is one of the elder members of the Motor Oil corporation. The company forms part of the empire of the Vardinoyannis family, who also own Panathinaikos.
'The hearts of supporters'
Even though Spanoudakis will be the official president, a statement from him today suggests that Filippidis will return when his ban ends in October. "There is no doubt in the minds of shareholders or in the hearts of our supporters that Angelos Filippidis remains president of Panathinaikos," Spanoudakis said.
