FC St. Pauli have one foot in the 1. Bundesliga after a demoralising 4-0 home defeat against city rivals Hamburger SV tonight in front of over 54,000 spectators.
Groth doubles advantage
St. Pauli would have opened the scoring had midfield player Thomas Meggle not missed a penalty in the 12th minute. Argentinian forward Bernardo Romeo then took advantage of the hosts' profligacy to give the visitors the lead after 19 minutes. Martin Groth doubled the visitors' advantage on the stroke of half-time.
Romeo scores again
Dutch defender Nico-Jan Hoogma scored a third goal five minutes after the interval and Romeo's second goal on 58 minutes merely rubbed salt in St. Pauli's wounds.
Virtually relegated
The defeat vitually condemns St Pauli to relegation. They need to win their remaining two games to have any chance of survival and hope 1. FC Nürnburg lose their last three matches.
