Portugal round-up: Belenenses dream fades

Vitória Guimarães shattered CF Os Belenenses' hopes of a UEFA Cup place next season with a 2-1 win on Friday.

Decisive penalties
Marcão put Belenenses ahead after just nine minutes but André levelled the scores eight minutes before half-time. However, disaster struck for Belenenses when Guimarães were awarded a penalty ten minutes after the interval which was calmly converted by Fangueiro.

Hopes fading
The win means fifth-placed Belenenses will almost certainly not overhaul third-placed SL Benfica who are six points ahead with a game in hand and a vastly superior goal difference. Only the top three teams in Portugal, plus the cup winners, qualify for Europe next season. Meanwhile, the win takes Guimarães to eighth place in the table.
