Legia Warszawa were convincing 3-0 winners over city rivals KP Polonia Warszawa in today's derby leaving them in a commanding position for the title with six matches left.
Bright opening
Polonia started brightly, particularly in midfield. However, it was Legia who went closest early on with Sylwester Czereszewski wasted two opportunities. Yet it was Legia who took the lead in the 33rd minute.
Goalkeeper loses ball
Maciej Murawski crossed the ball the from the right to Cezary Kucharski, who was standing ten metres in front of Polonia's goal. Goalkeeper Andrzej Krzysztalowicz took a risk and tried to claim the ball but instead bumped into Kucharski, and lost the ball. The rebound was picked up from Czereszewski, who lobbed the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
Sokolowski strike
Legia doubled their lead in the 79th minute courtesy of Tomasz Sokolowski. It was a fantastic solo effort with Sokolowski finishing an incisive run with a powerful shot from 20 metres that left Krzysztalowicz with no chance.
Svitlica ends good night
Yugoslavian Stanko Svitlica, who replaced Czereszewski five minutes from time, finished a great night for Legia. He received a short pass form Kucharski and scored from 18 metres out in last seconds of the match.
Liczka upbeat
"It was good match," said Polonia coach Werner Liczka despite defeat. "I cannot say we will stop our fight for the title, because there are still a few matches to play. We need to have more patience and self confidence in front of goal."
Win deserved
"I scored a great goal, but we all worked hard," said Sokolowski. "We played with purpose and deserved this win." The victory means Legia have now not been beaten in 15 matches at home.
