Former Hungarian international Tibor Simon is in a coma after being assaulted in Budapest on Sunday.

Rushed to hospital
The 36-year-old, now coach of MFC Sopron, was attacked in the capital after his team's match against Kispest Honvéd FC. Sopron lost the match 1-0 and Simon reportedly went out in the city to celebrate a friend's birthday. He was later found after the attack and taken by ambulance to the Szent János hospital where doctors removed several blood clots from his brain. The former Ferencvárosi TC defender is to be kept on a ventilator until he recovers consciousness.

Playing career
Simon spent 13 years with Ferencváros, appearing in the UEFA Champions League in 1995, and was capped 16 times by Hungary between 1989 and 1995. After retirement, he took up coaching posts at second division teams Budapesti VSC and REAC before taking up his current role at Sopron last autumn.
