The Venika village team prevailed 1-0 at NK Istra, champions of the south/west section of the second division. Marijo Darmopil's 32nd-minute goal gave Papuk the advantage going into Sunday's second leg.
Šibenik stalemate
The other play-off match between NK Vukovar 91 and HNK Šibenik ended in stalemate. Yet Šibenik, who like Papuk finished the Premier League season above the four relegation places, were much the better side against the north/east champions.
Day of destiny
Both ties will be decided on Sunday, with the victors going into next season's 12-team Prva HNL.
