Malta round-up: Hibernians wrap up season

Hibernians FC wrapped up their championship season today with a 2-2 draw against Birkirkara FC.

Champions Hibernians FC were presented with the Maltese Premier League trophy today after completing their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Birkirkara FC.

Birkirkara finish third
Hibernians rested several key players and as a consequence Birkirkara dictated most of the play as they claimed the point that leaves them third in the table, one place ahead of former champions Valletta FC. Birkirara remain hopeful of claiming a place in the UEFA Cup via the Maltese Trophy but, failing that, this result secures them entry into the UEFA Intertoto Cup.

Galea opens scoring
Michael Galea, who was a constant menace to the Hibernians defence, won a 20th-minute penalty after being felled by Adrian Pulis. But although he struck a post when he got to his feet to take the spot-kick, Michael Galea gathered the rebound and calmly put Birkirkara into the lead.

Rapid reply
Adrian Pulis headed a quick equaliser for Hibernians and the outstanding Adrian Ciantar put the new champions ahead with an angled shot on the hour. Hibernians were given the chance to extend their lead when Antoine Zahra was brought down inside the box by Chris Okoh. But Hibernians goalkeeper Mario Muscat saw his effort from eleven metres saved by opposite number Robert Savic. The visitors took full advantage of that reprieve when Joe Brincat made it 2-2 after 65 minutes.
