England round-up: Arsenal's double delight

Arsenal FC completed the league and cup double for the third time in their history by beating deposed champions Manchester United FC 1-0 at Old Trafford to clinch the FA Premiership title.

Good travellers
French international Sylvain Wiltord scored the goal that gave Arsenal a record 12th successive league victory and meant they became the first side for more than a century to remain unbeaten all season in the league away from home. The last time a team completed a top-flight league campaign unbeaten away from home was Preston North End FC in 1889, with Liverpool FC matching the feat five years later in the second division.

'Shift of power'
"We made a tremendous record tonight. It is a great result, they [United] are the side you want to beat," said Wenger. "The character in this team - we were as solid as a rock. We wanted tonight to have a shift of power. At 1-0 United realised they were not going to win the game tonight. The fact we have 84 points already is tremendous."

Liverpool second
With one game left Arsenal - who beat Chelsea FC in last weekend's FA Cup final - are seven points ahead of Liverpool, who beat Blackburn Rovers FC 4-3 tonight, with United third on 76 points. The Old Trafford side have never finished out of the top two since the Premier League was formed in 1992/93.

Winning strike
Arsenal scored their decisive goal on 57 minutes when Swedish international Fredrik Ljungberg picked up possession and nutmegged United's Laurent Blanc. When his low shot was pushed out by Fabien Barthez, Wiltord coolly stroked in his 17th goal of the season.

Seven-goal feast
In tonight's other fixture, Liverpool took a 23rd-minute lead at Anfield against Blackburn through English international Danny Murphy, only for the visitors to equalise five minutes later through Damien Duff. On-loan striker Nicolas Anelka restored Liverpool's advantage five minutes before half-time, only for Blackburn to equalise again through Andrew Cole.

Heskey winner
Within three minutes the team chasing second place in the table were back in front for a third time thanks to captain Sami Hyypiä, but Graeme Souness's side drew level again with ten minutes remaining thanks to Matt Jansen. However, it was Liverpool who had the last laugh when England striker Emile Heskey won them the match with four minutes left.
