A Turkish man has been jailed for 15 years for stabbing to death two Leeds United AFC supporters on the night before a UEFA Cup match in April 2000.
Tragedy
Kevin Speight and Christopher Loftus, supporters of Leeds, were killed during the disturbances before a UEFA Cup match against Galatasaray SK in Istanbul. Four other men were each sentenced to three months and 22 days for involvement in the disturbances that resulted in the deaths. Another two men were fined.
Many charges dropped
Police arrested 21 men on the night but prosecutors were only able to present material evidence against Umit Demir, who was convicted today of killing with provocation, and charges against many others were dropped. The defence has seven days to appeal against the verdict.
