Brøndby IF celebrated their ninth Superliga title after a 2-0 win against Lyngby FC.

Brøndby IF celebrated their ninth Superliga title on Thursday after a 2-0 win against Lyngby FC.

Narrow margin
Last season’s champions FC København were denied a second consecutive title by the narrowest of margins as Brøndby’s win kept them clear by virtue of their superior goal difference. Both sides finished with 69 points from 33 matches, Brøndby with a goal difference of plus 46, København with plus 37.

Disastrous run
Brøndby had taken a ten-point lead into the winter break but a disastrous run of results saw coach Åge Hareide dismissed last month and their lead in the Danish Superleague eroded down to nothing. At the start of this evening’s games, they were exactly level on points with Københavhn with both sides having won 19 games, drawn nine and lost four times.

Møller scores twice
Københavhn won their game 4-2 at Aalborg BK this evening and were two goals to the good after just 17 minutes as Peter Møller struck twice. Todi Jónsson and Bora Zivkovic put them 4-1 up later in the game and they were momentarily at the top of the table until Brøndby took charge against Lyngby.

Madsen seals victory
Kim Daugaard scored in the 65th minute to bring his side back to the top of the table and their title win was confirmed as Peter Madsen made it 2-0 win two minutes from time. Brøndby will now go into the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League, while Københavhn have to settle for a UEFA Cup place.

Midtjylland finish third
FC Midtjylland will also play in next season's UEFA Cup after clinching third place with a 3-1 win against Viborg FF despite going behind to Michael Nonbo's sixth-minute opener. Morten Skoubo levelled in the 59th minute, Razak Pimpong put them ahead six minutes later and Christian Magleby sealed the win on 75 minutes.

Vejle go down
At the other end of the table, Vejle BK were relegated even though they beat Esbjerg fB 2-0 with late goals from Bare Spindler and Alex Nørlund. Because of a far inferior goal difference, they needed a miracle to overtake AGF Århus.

Århus triumphant
In the end that was irrelevant because Århus beat Silkeborg IF 4-0 with strikes from Morten Poulsen, Søren Andersen and a double from Morten Rasmussen. In the evening’s other game, Akademisk Boldklub edged out Odense BK 4-3 with Piotr Stokowiec hitting the 80th-minute winner.
