Serhiy Shyschenko spared FC Metalurh Donetsk's blushes with a late penalty today as they struggled to overcome the Ukrainian Premier League's bottom side FC Arsenal Kyiv 2-1.
Paying the penalty
Donetsk had taken a fifth-minute lead through Shyschenko, before Arsenal fought back to level the scores in the 18th minute after Olexandr Kosiryn converted the afternoon's first spot-kick. The visitors frustrated their hosts until four minutes from time when Donetsk won a penalty for themselves, which was calmly put away by Shyschenko.
Drawing a blank
Donetsk go third in the table, 16 points behind city rivals FC Shakhtar Donetsk in second, but now two clear of fourth-placed FC Metalurh Zaporizhzhya, who were held to a goalless draw by FC Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih.
Looking up
FC Metalist Kharkiv moved into fifth place after a 2-0 win over FC Karpaty Lviv, thanks to second-half strikes from Serhiy Mizin and Vitali Pushkutsa. Serhiy Onopko and Serhiy Shevtsov scored as FC Vorskla Poltava moved off the bottom of the table with a 2-0 win over FC Tavriya Simferopol.
Score draw
Meanwhile, FC Zakarpattya Uzhgorod and FC Metalurh Mariupil drew 1-1 with Serhiy Hrybanov scoring an injury time equaliser for the home side, after Igor Prodan had netted a 15th-minute opener for Mariupil.
