SK Rapid Wien have sacked coach Lothar Matthäus after a disappointing season at the Austrian Bundesliga club.
Weeks of speculation
Rapid finished eighth in the top flight this season, the lowest position in their 103-year history. The decision to release the former Germany captain followed weeks of speculation over his future.
Contract severed
"Rapid have this morning severed its contract with the coaching team of Lothar Matthäus," Rapid said in a statement on their website today. The 41-year-old had signed a two-year contract with the club in September last year.
