Recre return to top flight

Members

RC Recreativo de Huelva and Racing Santander have won promotion to the Spanish Primera División.

RC Recreativo de Huelva, Spain's oldest established team, have won a place in the Primera División for only the second time in their history after a comeback victory over nearest rivals Xerez CD sealed promotion.

Santander join Huelva
They will be joined in the top flight by Racing Santander, relegated last season, who overcame Segunda División champions Club Atlético de Madrid 1-0. Bernd Schuster's Xerez slipped to fifth in the table having spent most of the season in the promotion places.

Soriano scores twice
Recre, who spent one season in the first division in 1978/79 before being relegated, fell behind to Xerez after an eight-minute Antonio Calle strike. However, Fernando Soriano equalised on the stroke of half-time and secured the game from the penalty spot in the 77th minute after a foul on David Fernández that earned Xerez goalkeeper Ramón Marti a red card.

Relegation battle
Real Jaen CF and CF Extremadura have been relegated to the third division after both failed to win their matches, whilst two of Gimnàstic de Tarragona, Real Murcia, CP Ejido and Levant UD will join them after next week's final fixtures.
