Article body
Southampton FC have signed Swedish international defender Michael Svensson for €3.1m from French club ES Troyes Aube Champagne.
Deal delayed
The FA Premiership side said today that the 26-year-old centre-half had signed a four-year contract and although the deal was agreed with Troyes a few weeks ago, it had to be put on hold because the player was away at the FIFA World Cup.
'Good in the air'
Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe said: "He is the right age and height, he is wiry, strong and very good in the air. He has improved on the ground over the past year and although he did not play in the World Cup finals, you do not get in the 23 if you do not have something about you."
Seeing double
Svensson will link up with his Swedish namesake and international team-mate Anders Svensson at the south-coast club.
