SC Astra Ploiesti and FC Petrolul Ploiesti today agreed to join forces and form a new club, Astra Ploiesti. The name has been registered with the Romanian Professional League in time for the new season. The main investors of the two clubs will each take a 50 per cent shareholding in the club.

Petrolul continue
Petrolul will provide eight players to Astra but will also continue to exist as a separate club in the second division. Petrolul were relegated last season and will still be able to gain promotion to the Romanian first division in their own right. Meanwhile Astra will maintain their place in the top flight, finishing in twelfth position.

Board reshuffle
Former Petrolul president Florin Bercea has been appointed as the new president of the board with former Astra president Petre Buduru named as the executive president. They will be supported by two vice-presidents, Romeo Pascu and Marian Manea, both of whom were top officials at Astra. Former Petrolul sports director Edi Alexandru becomes general director of the new club. Marian Bondrea will captain Astra. Ploiesti, where the two teams come from, is a major city 60km north of Bucharest.
