Ukraine round-up: Donetsk move level at the top

FC Metalurh Donetsk joined FC Shakhtar Donetsk at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

FC Metalurh Donetsk joined their city rivals FC Shakhtar Donetsk at the top of the Ukrainian Premier League today after beating FC Chornomorets Odesa 1-0.

Level at the top
Olexandr Zotov scored the only goal of the game, in the 40th minute, which moved Donetsk level on points with the champions, but second due to their inferior goal difference. Shakhtar maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win over their chief rivals for the title, FC Dynamo Kyiv yesterday, Andriy Vorobei with the winner.

FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk lost ground on the leaders as they were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Polihraftekhnica Olexandria. Oleh Venhlynsky rescued a point for Dnipro after Polihraftechnica had taken a first half lead through Olexiy Horodov.

Konovalov winner
Serhiy Konovalov snatched a late winner for FC Arsenal Kyiv as they ran out 2-1 winners over FC Vorskla Poltava. Shalva Apkhazava had earlier given them the lead before Ihor Makovei had equalised for Vorskla from the penalty spot.

Five-goal thriller
FC Metalurh Mariupil staged a brave fightback but just fell short of their target as FC Karpaty Lviv won 3-2. Taras Kabanov scored twice and Vasyl Shved once inside the first half hour, before Alexander Rikun and Stepan Molokutsko scored for Mariupil in the second half.

Other matches
FC Tavriya Simferopol beat FC Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih 4-2 with Vasil Gigiadze scoring two for Tavriya and FC Metalurh Zaporizhya overcame FC Volyn Lutsk 1-0, while FC Metalist Kharkiv drew 1-1 with FC Obolon Kyiv.
