Article body
FK Ventspils were held to a 1-1 draw by FHK Liepajas Metalurgs in the Virsliga today.
Penalty miss
Metalurgs looked the far more dangerous side throughout the game, but Alexander Katasonov missed a penalty after seven minutes to the obvious disappointment of the home fans. And, the hosts were punished by their mistake soon afterwards as in-form midfield player Deimantas Bicka set up a goal for Vits Rimkus. However, Katasonov recovered from his earlier penalty miss to earn Metalurgs a draw.
Clear at the top
The result leaves Ventspils top of the first division with 47 points after 18 games, five clear of FC Skonto, who do though have a game in hand on the leaders. Liepajas are still in third, a massive 18 points behind with a game in hand as well.
Relegation battle
Elsewhere today, the bottom two clubs in the division played each other with second from bottom Policijas FK beating bottom of the table FK Riga 6-1 thanks to two goals from Igors Dacko. As a result, Policijas have moved five points ahead of Riga and they have a game in hand on their relegation rivals.
