Gregan has put pen to paper on a three-year deal after passing a medical at The Hawthorns at the weekend. The terms of the transfer mean that Preston will receive an extra €800,000 if Albion avoid relegation this season.

West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace said: "I believe he will be a tremendous asset to us as we gear up for the Premiership challenge ahead. He is a leader and a player [manager] Gary Megson was eager to bring in."

Gregan can operate in central defence or central midfield. West Brom open their Premiership campaign – their first in the top flight since 1985/86 – against Manchester United FC on 17 August.
