Spanish outfit Villarreal CF have been awarded a 3-0 default win over ES Troyes Aube Champagne which puts them through to the UEFA Intertoto Cup finals, after the French club was found to have fielded an ineligible player in Wednesday’s semi-final second leg in Troyes.
Ineligible player
UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body gave their ruling on Thursday after hearing that Troyes had used the player David Vairelles in the match. A UEFA statement said that Vairelles had not been registered with UEFA and was therefore not eligible to take part in the competition.
Aggregate success
Vairelles came on as a substitute for Medhi Leroy for Troyes in the 83rd minute of the match, which the Frenchmen won 2-1. The first leg in Villarreal on 31 July finished in a goalless draw. However, the 3-0 default win for Villarreal means that the Spanish side go through on a 3-0 aggregate scoreline to face their compatriots Málaga CF in the UEFA Intertoto Cup finals over two legs on 13 and 27 August.
Monday appeal date
UEFA said that if an appeal were to be lodged against the Control and Disciplinary Body, the UEFA Appeals Body would meet to discuss the matter next Monday, 12 August.
