Flo strikes back
United looked set for maximum points at the Stadium of Light thanks to a seventh-minute goal from Ryan Giggs, but new Sunderland signing Tore Andre Flo capped an impressive debut by levelling the scores on 70 minutes.
Keane dismissed
There was more misery for Sir Alex Ferguson's side as captain Roy Keane was sent off late in the game. The former Republic of Ireland captain appeared to elbow his old international colleague Jason McAteer in front of referee Uriah Rennie who showed Keane a straight red card.
Tottenham on top
With Liverpool FC and Arsenal FC not in action, Tottenham took the opportunity to move top of the English Premiership with a 2-1 victory at home to Southampton FC.
Late penalty
Les Ferdinand's 10th-minute strike had been cancelled out by a Mauricio Taricco own goal 20 minutes later before Tottenham, boosted by the arrival of Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane today, clinched the points with a last-minute penalty from Teddy Sheringham.
Anelka hat-trick
Elsewhere, Nicolas Anelka scored his first hat-trick for his new club, newly-promoted Manchester City FC, as they beat Everton FC 3-1 at Maine Road despite being reduced to ten men with the dismissal of Shaun Wright-Phillips after 28 minutes.
New boys win
It was a good day for the other promoted sides too, as Darren Moore's goal gave West Bromwich Albion FC a 1-0 win against Fulham FC, while excellent goals from Paul Devlin and Damien Johnson gave Birmingham City FC a 2-1 home success over Leeds United AFC.
Misery for West Ham
West Ham United FC had a miserable afternoon in today's London derby as they conceded goals to Claus Jensen and John Fortune to lose 2-0 at home to Charlton Athletic FC. Middlesbrough FC had a happier time, Joseph Desiré Job hitting a last-minute winner to secure a 1-0 home triumph over Blackburn Rovers FC.
