Horrific injuries
The 26-year-old Göteborg supporter was left in a coma after being seriously injured in a fight before Monday night's match. Witnesses to the trouble in a south Stockholm park described how he had been kicked in the head and hit with an iron bar.

Unable to save him
Subsequent efforts to save him failed and he was declared dead today. "His condition got worse on Thursday and the head injuries that he had sustained from people jumping on his head cost him his life," said Margareta Hamark of the Karolinska hospital.

First death
It is the first time a Swedish fan has died as a result of violence at a football match. "We thought that the violence had started to fade off but this is probably one of the darkest days in Swedish football," said policeman Jens Mårtensson.
