Mechelen sack De Mos

KV Mechelen have parted company with technical director Aad de Mos just before the new season.

KV Mechelen have sacked technical director Aad de Mos despite his role in helping them return to the Belgian first division.

Too expensive
Mechelen, who appointed Stéphane Demol as coach earlier in the summer, said they could no longer afford to pay De Mos. "This is because of our budget," said Mechelen commercial director Luc Verheyen.  "A club like ours cannot afford to pay a technical director.

'I must act'
Verheyen, who replaced Geert Lermyte as commercial director last month, added: "The president gave me a mission to save the club and I must act. Up to now, Mechelen has been living beyond its means." Verheyen said the decision was not personal and he emphasised De Mos's efforts in helping the club win promotion to the Jupiler League.

De Mos, who as coach of Mechelen in the 1980s led them to domestic success and victory in the 1988 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, rejoined the club as technical director in 2000. The Dutchman has not commented on his departure, except to say "my lawyer is handling this affair".

New team
Demol took charge of Mechelen in June, replacing temporary coach Fi van Hoof, who led the team to promotion in 2001/02. The new coach, who was formerly with Turnhout and Geel, has appointed Alex Czerniatynski as his assistant.
