Favourites Saint Patrick's Athletic FC are out of the FAI Cup after defeat at Derry City FC.

Favourites Saint Patrick's Athletic FC crashed out of the FAI Cup tonight, after a 3-1 defeat away to Derry City FC.

Passionate night
Pat Dolan's side haven’t won the Republic of Ireland's premier cup competition since 1961. However, they will have to wait until next year to try again after a passionate and bruising encounter at the Brandywell.

Early advantage
The Dublin side took the lead after six minutes, when Welsh striker Tony Bird found space in the Derry penalty area to fire home right footed from 12 metres. However, Derry fought back and dominated the rest of the first half, with David Kelly coming closest, when his close-range effort struck the crossbar.

Osam off
Then, St Patrick's lost influential midfielder Paul Osam, who was sent off by referee Hugh Byrne. Shortly into the second half, Derry equalised when the visitors' midfield player Robert Griffin scored an own goal.

Martyn double
With the extra man advantage, Derry dominance continued and they were rewarded on 66 minutes when midfielder Ciaran Martyn struck to give them the lead. Derry added a third in the 90th minute, when midfielder Martyn struck again to put a convincing look on the scoreline and book his side's place in the FAI Cup semi finals
