Rinkus opener
Janis Rinkus scored a rebound early in the game to stun the favourites, and Girts Karlsons picked up another parry to beat Deniss Romanovs on 48 minutes. Vladimirs Zavornkovs' cross then found Latvian international Vits Rimkus who pulled back a goal for Ventspils.
Grebis winner
However Kristaps Grebis scored eleven minutes from time to wrap up a shock win. The result leaves Paul Ashworth's men witha big task in the return leg if they are to reach the final.
Comfortable for Skonto
In the other semi-final first leg, FC Skonto ran out comfortable 4-1 winners over FK Auda Riga. Skonto's 17-year-old midfield player Igors Semjonovs opened the scoring before Vladimirs Kolesnicenko, Viktors Morozs and Aleksandrs Elisejevs added further goals. Kaspar Gorkss scored a consolation goal for Auda.
