The veteran centre-back sustained the injury in last Friday's league victory over AC Ajaccio and tests on Tuesday confirmed the severity of the problem.
'Fighting spirit'
"We will have to learn to live without him on and off the pitch. He is a key player who brings a lot of fighting spirit," Marseille coach Alain Perrin said. "We reviewed the matter with the other players and I asked every one them to become a leader." Defender Manuel Dos Santos will take over the captaincy.
