Bolton Wanderers FC's Stig Tøfting was sentenced on Tuesday to four months in jail.

Bolton Wanderers FC's Danish midfield player Stig Tøfting was sentenced to four months in jail today for an assault in a Copenhagen restaurant.

Four-month sentence
"Stig Tøfting was convicted to four months in jail," a spokeswoman from the Copenhagen Court said. "He is now considering whether to appeal or not."

Copenhagen incident
The incident happened at a Copenhagen restaurant in June when the 33-year-old, who received a suspended sentence for a violent incident in 1999, met his Danish team-mates for a post-FIFA World Cup reunion in central Copenhagen.

Agent comments
Tøfting, nicknamed 'The lawn mower', played a key role for Denmark as they topped their group at the World Cup before losing to England in the second round. His agent, Carsten Aabrink, said Tøfting had made a full apology to his victim, and revealed he would be back at Bolton for training tomorrow.

Support needed
Under Danish law, Tøfting does not go immediately to jail and Aabrink said his client would probably be unaffected by the decision in the short term should he appeal. "As long as his family support him, and we support him and Bolton support him, we will get through this," said Aabrink.

'Another chance'
"You have another chance to take it to the next court," he continued. "I don't think it will have any influence on his season at Bolton. He's surprised that the punishment was so tough. He's taken it like a man."
