Ex-Sliema Wanderers FC star Joseph John Aquilina has been named the new coach of Marsaxlokk FC.

Former Sliema Wanderers FC star Joseph John Aquilina is the new coach of Marsaxlokk FC after Albert Vella became the first managerial casualty of the Maltese season.

Disastrous start
The 45-year-old Aquilina, who quit as manager of Division One side Xghajra Tornadoes after just four games this term, is confident the seasiders can turnaround their disastrous start to the campaign, which has seen them win once in six outings.

‘Major fight’
“It will be a major fight from here on but I believe we can preserve our first division status," Aquilina said. "It's a challenge as it's my first time in charge of a top-flight club.”

14 caps
Aquilina began his playing career with Sliema Wanderers in 1974 before joining Florian six years later. More commonly known as 'JJ', he made his international debut in 1979 in a 2-0 loss against Wales in a UEFA European Championship qualifier and went on to represent his country a further 13 times.
