Dwight Lodeweges has resigned as coach of the struggling Eredivisie club FC Groningen.

Support faded
The 44-year-old leaves his job with the Dutch side at the foot of the table, having collected just one point from eight games. "I noticed that I didn't have the support that I needed from the management and the players," Lodeweges said. The board had previously publicly backed Lodeweges, but he clearly felt that support had faded.

Losing battle
Lodeweges, who had been coach of Groningen, situated in the north of the Netherlands, since the summer of 2001, steered the club away from relegation last season. But they have been fighting a losing battle so far this campaign and yesterday's 3-2 defeat by RKC Waalwijk proved to be the final straw. The club are yet to announce a successor.
