BV Borussia Dortmund were humbled 3-0 by SC Freiburg in the German Cup.

BV Borussia Dortmund were humbled 3-0 by SC Freiburg in the German Cup while TSV 1860 München and VfL Wolfsburg played out a thriller in the only tie between two top-flight teams tonight.

Players rested
Dortmund coach Matthias Sammer rested some of his big names for the trip to Freiburg but still fielded the likes of Christian Wörns, Stefan Reuter, Lars Ricken, Ewerthon and Marcio Amoroso. The German champions were two goals behind at the break after strikes from Soumaila Coulibaly and Jay Manner. Dortmund were as disappointing after the interval and their humilation was completed by Andreas Zeyer.

Bielefeld beaten
Another 1. Bundesliga side to lose were DSC Arminia Bielefeld, who went down 1-0 at ten-man RW Oberhausen. Sasa Radulovic's 23rd-minute goal was enough for the second division side, who had Moustapha Salifou dismissed for his second yellow card on 64 minutes.

Meggle leaves it late
It was a better night for two other top-flight sides in action. Second-half strikes from Marcel Maltritz (52) and Kim Christensen (72) gave Hamburger SV a 2-0 win over MSV Duisburg. Thomas Meggle's last-gasp effort gave FC Hansa Rostock a 1-0 triumph over second division high-flyers Eintracht Frankfurt.

Köln rampant

Penalty thriller
In the evening's final match, 1860 won a dramatic penalty shoot-out 8-7 after a thrilling 2-2 draw at home to Wolfsburg. The hosts went 2-0 up after Martin Max's strike on 16 minutes, and then a Rodrigo Costa effort 60 seconds later. But Dorinel Monteanu pulled one back for Wolfgang Wolf's men five minutes later, before Diego Klimowicz levelled matters on 51.
