Article body
Derry City FC closed the gap on the leaders after defeating the Irish Premier Division's bottom club University College Dublin FC 1-0 tonight.
Tight affair
Playing in front of their home fans, Derry, who had two games in hand prior to tonight, badly needed a victory to keep on the tails of the frontrunners. The match was a tight affair, with chances few and far between for both sides.
Automatic relegation
However, it was Derry who finally broke the deadlock 13 minutes from time, when Welsh striker Jamie Hughes sprung from the bench to convert from close range to give Kevin Mahon's side all three points. The visitors remain bottom of the table in the automatic relegation position, one point behind Bray Wanderers AFC.
