Former coach
The 55-year-old Asatiani, who played more than 200 games for FC Dinamo Tbilisi during the Soviet period and went on to become coach of club, was reportedly shot in his car in the centre of Tbilisi. Witnesses reported the gunfire came from a passing vehicle.
Sports minister
After his career as a player and coach ended, Asatiani went on to become the chairman of Georgia's state department for sport between 1990 and 2000. Latterly, he was the general director of Georgian airline Airzena.
