Jean Paul van Gastel has joined De Graafschap until the end of the season after leaving Italy's Como Calcio.

Jean Paul van Gastel has signed for De Graafschap until the end of the season after impressing while training at the Eredivisie club.

Free agent
The former Feyenoord, Willem II and NAC Breda defender left Italian club Como Calcio during the summer and, as a free agent, had been joining in with training sessions at De Graafschap to keep up his fitness. He has been able to join the club on a permanent basis after a group of local businessmen agreed to pay his wages.

Experienced defender
Van Gastel, who has five Dutch caps, is expected to make his debut in De Graafschap's home match against SC Excelsior next week. "We reached agreement last night and the intention is to make use of my experience in the back line," said the 30-year-old Van Gastel. "I'm in the mood to get started and, although I will not be playing this weekend, I hope to start against Excelsior."
