Sami Hyypiä was named Finland's player of 2002 by the Finnish Football Association on Sunday, the second successive year the Liverpool FC defender has collected the award.

"It's great to get this award," he said. "It is the biggest award that a footballer can get in Finland. There are so many people that should be thanked. I have got a lot of support both on the way up and the way down. Especially when things have not gone well, the support has been very important."
Popovitch recognised
Striker Valeri Popovitch of FC Haka was named footballer of the year in the Finnish first division, while coach Keith Armstrong of champions HJK Helsinki was named coach of the year.
