Feyenoord cleared over transfers

Feyenoord and club chairman Jorien van den Herik have been acquitted of tax fraud charges by a Dutch court.

UEFA Cup holders Feyenoord and club chairman Jorien van den Herik were acquitted of tax fraud charges by a Rotterdam court today.

Cleared of all charges
They were cleared of all charges after they had been accused by Dutch tax authorities of trying to avoid paying income tax on transfer fees in connection with three player purchases in the 1990s. Van den Herik declined to comment before leaving the court.

Transfers questioned
Prosecutors earlier this month had called on the court to sentence Van den Herik to 12 months in jail and had also asked the court to impose a €1.1m fine on Feyenoord as they felt the club had acted illegally in connection with the transfers of Patrick Allotey, Christian Gyan and Aurelio Vidmar.

'Insufficient evidence'
The club had said there was no substance to the allegations and rejected charges of any wrongdoing. It had called on the court to dismiss the case due to a lack of evidence. "The judge argued that prosecutors provided insufficient legal and convincing evidence to prosecute Feyenoord and van den Herik," said a statement on Feyenoord's official website.
