Ligament damage
Tests on Monday revealed that the Argentinian had torn the cruciate ligament, as well as another ligament, in his right knee during Sunday's Primera División defeat by Real Racing Club Santander at El Sardinero. Celta coach Miguel Angel Lotina admitted that he was "more upset with the injury than with the three points lost". "It is a huge blow but we have to get on with it," he said.
'A clean break'
Doctors will leave the affected knee in a cast for a month before deciding whether to operate on the injury or leave it to heal naturally. "It was a clean break," said Celta club medic Mario Galán, "which is why we have been able to go straight ahead with the treatment." The Racing match was Méndez's seventh seasonal appearance for the Galicians, who lie fourth in the title race.
