Article summary
Understanding different cultures is crucial to the football partnership between Europe and Africa.
Article body
Co-operation programme
The two aspects were emphasised at a workshop in Nyon, western Switzerland, devoted to the Meridian project, a co-operation programme involving UEFA, the African football confederation CAF, and national associations from the two continents.
Sporting and material support
Within the Meridian project, many European associations have entered into partnerships with their counterparts in Africa, and are providing sporting and material support to help African countries develop their football infrastructures – all with the aim of raising overall football standards.
Different approaches
Experiences encountered thus far show that it is essential to understand cultural differences between the partners, who have different approaches to working, teaching and training. Both UEFA and CAF can provide help in bringing together suitable partners, and also intervene if there are communication problems between partners.
Personal contacts
The Nyon workshop also ascertained the importance of respect between European and African partners, with the establishment of personal contacts and regular meetings.
Workshop conclusions
A number of conclusions were reached at the workshop. Each association involved in partnerships should appoint a Meridian project co-ordinator, and draw up a list of priorities with the help of UEFA and CAF. Partners' expectations should also be properly understood, with appropriate recommendations available. Computer equipment is considered a No1 priority for African football administrations.
Dialogue and feedback
UEFA and CAF have also been asked to distribute activity reports to all the partners, and it was agreed that regular contact, dialogue and feedback are essential if partnerships are to be a success.
Meridian Cup
The Meridian project has been in operation since 1997. In addition to activities off the field, the Meridian Cup tournament, featuring four national Under-17 teams from each continent, is staged every two years. The next tournament will be held in Egypt early next year.
