Excellent year
Tymoschuk helped his side to win a league and Ukrainian Cup double last season and has played in all 37 of Shakhtar's official games this season, as well as holding a regular place in the Ukraine national team. Tymoschuk's career started at 17 when he first appeared for FC Volyn Lutsk. Since then he has played 126 league games, scoring 14 times.
Shakhtar breakthrough
It is the first time that a Shakhtar player has won the prestigious award. The previous eight titles have all gone to Dynamo players, with the exception of Andriy Shevchenko, who won it both as a Dynamo and a Milan player. Shevchenko had also won the award for last three years in succession.
